Our black copal comes from a spectacular tree from South America. The “elephant tree” or “torote” in Spanish can survive an entire year without a drop of water. The branches and trunk are 60% water and therefore can regulate their own temperature. In hot temperatures, it can sometimes drizzle under this tree. The tree has a rich and long relationship with “well-being. The small fern-like leaves are highly aromatic and have been used in steam baths for centuries. In Mayan and Aztec cultures, it was one of the top medicinal plants, including for wound healing.

The resin was used in all major religious ceremonies and described as “food of the gods. The sacred book of the Quiché Maya people already describes copal. The sun, moon and stars came to earth and brought copal with them. In a further passage, a shaman tells him that “The lord of the forest” has made him sick and there is no cure. His friend replies, “Don't worry, I am leaving now to pray to the lord of the forest and I will bring him his nourishment in your name. (Reference to copal incense)

Black copal is linked to the water element and has a strong connection to creation and fertility gods.

Scent Experience: Black copal smells woody, mysterious, sensual and creates a rich, meditative and aphrodisiac atmosphere. It truly smells like walking through a damp forest.
